Scandinavian fashion brand Rika launched a retail installation and the fourth issue of its magazine at Harvey Nichols yesterday.
‘I started to miss working with people in a group and getting inspired by the people around me,’ says Ulrika Lundgren, explaining how she came to edit a magazine in addition to designing her own line, Rika. ‘If I design, it’s very much up to me, but with Rika Magazine, it’s about all the creative people that inspire me.’
Yesterday, Lundgren gathered some of those inspirational characters for an intimate lunch at Harvey Nichols’s Fifth Floor Restaurant. The occasion? Celebrating the publication of the fourth issue of Rika Magazine, as well as a concurrent retail installation in the store.
Irina Lazareanu, best known as a model, but currently putting the finishing touches on her LP with Sean Lennon, wafted in wearing a vintage tea dress, green felt Maison Michel hat, Rika jacket and Charlotte Olympia Heels. Stylist/muse/model Valentine Fillol-Cordier, illustrator Daisy de Villeneuve and editor/sunglasses designer Anna Laub toured Rika’s installation before heading upstairs for champagne and crème brulee.
The fourth-floor space, anchored by a collage of photographs from the magazine, contains selections from Rika. Star-strewn scarves, studded leather jackets and seasonless handbags share rails with hero pieces from the edgy brands stocked at Rika’s Amsterdam store.
The magazine is something of a visual diary of the creative people Lundgren meets, she says. The newest issue features shoots with Alison Mosshart and Annabelle Dexter-Jones, and verses from Helena Christensen and Lazareanu. ‘It’s very spontaneous. I choose people because I really like their characters, and we’re giving these girls chances to show their other sides.’
Even Purple Editor Olivier Zahm, who shot one of the fashion spreads, changed his MO for the mag. ‘It was hard to keep Olivier from taking models’ clothes off,’ Rika Creative Editor Jen Carey says, smiling. ‘Olivier kept saying, “But maybe we can take her shirt off,” and we’d say, “No, that’s not what this is about.”’

HARVEY NICHOLS is paying tribute to chic Swedish label Rika in a new temporary installation, inspired by its muses - Alison Mosshart, Irina Lazareanu, Valentine Fillol-Cordier and Annabel Dexter-Jones - with a mannequin to represent each girl.
The space will carry the label’s Scandinavian-inspired, romantic yet wearable styles, its leather handbags (favoured by Carine Roitfeld and Chloe Sevigny), as well as a mixture of the brands stocked at its Amsterdam store - including Alexander Wang, Acne, Proenza Schouler and Camilla Skovgaard.
The launch was celebrated with a stylish launch at the Knightsbridge store yesterday, attended by Irina Lazareanu and Valentine Fillol-Cordier.
