MARK MANDERS’ BEAUTIFUL NIGHTMARES AT THE HAMMER

Mark Manders’ simple, while simultaneously sad, creepy and beautiful, sculptures are up at The Hammer Museum in Parallel Occurrences/Documented Assignments. Combining (literally and references to) every day objects with the simplest of media and colors, Manders’ work feels like an incredibly familiar dream in which one is completely, almost desperately, alone. And that’s just when he places a few vertical pieces of wood together.

Mark Manders: Parallel Occurrences/Documented Assignments is up at The Hammer Museum until January 2. While you’re there, check out equally awesome shows by My Barbarian and Julian Hoeber (which I may just write about next week; I can’t help but have a small art-crush on the man). If that isn’t enough reason to go, The Hammer is in the midst of completely free admission for 20 days to celebrate its 20th anniversary! So no excuses. You really must see this work in person.

WE’RE OBSESSED WITH ASHKAHN & CO. CARDS

Check out the hilarious cards we both have and are getting in from Ashkahn & Co. Cutest, funniest cards ever, and you support a local artist with each purchase!

The latest addition. It’s sure to bring out Beavis and Butthead chuckles in even the most stuffy acquaintance.

After quickly selling out, these are back!

I gave this to my boyfriend for his birthday (I was trying to equate the excess of food with all the love in our relationship, blah blah), and he said the little dude reminded him of me because I’m always overeating. So I’ve sort of formed a personal connection with this adorable, pink, barfing blob. He’s just so cute!

Clearly, more than just the snowman are perfect for the holidays, or any occasion!

KEEP YOUR OUTFIT FESTIVE FROM HEAD TO TOE

In light of the holidays, we’re really feelin’ red pumps today.

First, we have our red suede pumps, Kat, in Lipstick Red, back in stock just in time for all of your holiday parties.

We created this pump at the request of one of our favorite fashion friends, Christene Barberich (amazing editor for Refinery29, NY Times, etc..), and she was right on the money. They were such a big hit last year, we’ve re-issued them.

Second, there’s this beyond gorgeous ’50s-themed short chiller starring fabulous red pumps on Bryce Dallas Howard (accented by red lips and, of course, red hair) by one of our fave photographers, Alex Prager.

TENOVERSIX’S SATURDAY STORE PROFILE ON THE SSWTR BLOG

SATURDAY STORE PROFILE: Ten Over Six
Friday, November 19, 2010

Slow and Steady Wins the Race blog’s weekly feature SATURDAY STORE PROFILE, takes a look at some of our favorite stores and the people behind them. This week we’re featuring TENOVERSIX.

TenOverSix is a fresh approach to the standard fashion multi-label boutique. Instead of focusing on ready-to-wear, it focuses on another element of the industry: accessories. As the most statement-worthy part of fashion, TenOverSix offers fashion-forward, indie, and high-concept designer accessories, all under one roof.

We asked them for five items that would be on their Ultimate Wish List:

1 the entire Zipporah Films collection (some of which we carry at TENOVERSIX…. but i want them

2 and unlimited-lifelong gift certificate to BOOKSOUP so that i can buy books for my family and friends forever

3 all the albums released on the MEXICAN SUMMER label- not only is the music great but the cover art is super beautiful

4 a toy that my dog can chew and never destroy

5 and undocumented (platonic) sleep-over with fran lebowitz

Opened in October 2008, the 2,000 sq/ft lifestyle-concept store stocks a wide selection of shoes and handbags, jewelry, hats, belts, lingerie, scarves, sunglasses, swimwear, mens ties, a well-edited selection of ready-to-wear, grooming accessories, small leather goods, home décor, gifts, books, magazines, film, music on vinyl, and art.

TenOverSix aims to embody the general aesthetic of a gallery by presenting well-chosen fashion pieces in category specific installations. In addition to the fashion and design, TenOverSix is constantly curating art with a rotating selection of paintings, photography, and sculpture from local, New York and International artists throughout the shop. TenOverSix hosts pop-up stores, often from New York and permanently hosts a section of books from LA’s Book Soup. The owners intend for the customer to experience fashion, and have fun while shopping the inspirational, multi-sensory atmosphere.

TenOverSix stocks a mix of like-minded designers and brands that share a love of distinctive details, quality and stylish relevance including Acne, Alexander Wang, A.P.C., Comme Des Garcons, Vena Cava, Peter Jensen, Slow and Steady Wins the Race, Loeffler Randall, TenOverSix, Vivienne Westwood, Rachel Comey, Bodkin, VPL and Band of Outsiders to name a few. The boutique has recently launched its TenOverSix Private Label, consisting of ready-to-wear designed by Design Director, Brady Cunningham and shoes and handbags designed by Creative Director, Kristen Lee.
