Kristen & fam on Dallas’ Style Sheet
TenOverSix is opening a second location in Dallas, TX this Spring 2013 as part of the Joule Hotel renovation and expansion. We chat with Tenoversix co-owner and creative director, Kristen Lee, to get the skinny.
TenOverSix: A new TOS! How exciting! How did this come about?
Kristen Lee: We are so excited for the new store. It’s going to be so beautiful, a fresh take on what we do best. We will be located in the Joule Hotel in downtown Dallas. They came to us to open up in the hotel lobby, along with some other great retail, and it turned out to be a perfect fit. The hotel is going under a big renovation and will be even more of a destination than it already is.
The TenOverSix Dallas store is really two stores, side-by-side. One is TenOverSix and will offer Dallas our favorite women’s apparel designers, killer shoes, great bags, and very unique jewelry. The other store, which is attached to the hotel lobby, is called TenOverSix Presents (like we are presenting pieces for your enjoyment…!), a take on the language used on film marquees & credits. TenOverSix Presents will provide curated gifts to hotel guests and amazing pieces in the world of home design, industrial design, artwork, beauty, and printed matter. We have some pretty insane lighting going into the spaces as well (also avail for purchase)!
TOS: Why Dallas?
KL: Why not Dallas?! We have grown to love the city, and we will provide something fresh there, which is very appealing. We’re also really enjoying going to Dallas, and Austin, much more now! For a long time, we’ve worked so much between NY and LA that it’s kinda great working in a city that’s new to us with so much exciting and creative things going on. The people are great and the art scene and architecture of the city are pretty impressive. I’m going to start saying “y’all” very soon.
TOS: What else can you tell us about the store?
KL: Well, for one thing, it will be beautiful. It’s an all-white space with terrazzo flooring, custom lighting by Bec Brittain and Adam Silverman (two of our favorite lighting designers, hands down), and it will be stocked to the brim with beautiful fashion, artwork, and home pieces. We bought from about 80 designers and compiled a really interesting assortment. We can’t wait to see it all come together!
The designers selected range from artisans we know in places like Brooklyn, LA, Portland, Marfa, to fashion darlings from Stockholm, NY and Paris. We hope our customers in Dallas will both be familiar with some of the stock and discover new designers as well. We have some exclusives that are amazing. Our first art show will be Alika Cooper, also from LA. We plan to rotate in different artists, pop-up shops, and trunk shows throughout the year. The stores will be adjacent to Weekend Coffee, the new coffee shop in the hotel, which is ideal for shopping & a coffee date.
TOS: What else is going on at the Joule Hotel?
KL: Aside from being a really beautiful boutique hotel, with a well-known rooftop pool and serious art collection, the property has undergone an expansion that is pretty dynamic. When it’s done later this spring, there will be at retail level: Weekend Coffee, TenOverSix, Traffic LA, Comme Des Garcons Play, Taschen Library, two amazing restaurants and one craft cocktail bar. We’ve consulted with the hotel on other creative aspects of the expansion (more on that later), so we are very excited to see it all open. It will be a really fun spot!
